Sweet Auburn Perspective: a visual history of justice and reconciliation featuring Wheat Street Baptist Church and WERD Studio

For the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend REMERGE and ColorATL are hosting the original exhibit, Sweet Auburn Perspective, a visual history of justice and reconciliation featuring Wheat Street Baptist Church and WERD Studio.

Wheat Street is one of the most influential institutions in shaping of the Sweet Auburn community as well as the civil rights movement, including Dr. King.

WERD Studio is the first radio station owned and operated by African-Americans. Located above the SCLC offices, they became a central instrument for Dr. King’s messages and announcements for the civil rights movement.

We will celebrate the opening of the exhibit on Friday, January 18th with a panel discussion from 7pm-8pm. Doors will open at 6:30pm. The panel will include Ricci de Forest, owner of WERD and the Madame C.J. Walker Museum, Kevin Jackson, elder and vice-president of the Wheat Street Foundation, and William Massey, founder of ColorATL. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Andy Odle, director of REMERGE.
